Three-string Galax lick

  • The "Galax lick" is a useful little trick, common in bluegrass and oldtime banjo, but also found many other places, even in classical music sometimes.

    In it's simplest form it looks like this:

    It's occasionally used as an ending, but more often as an opening of a phrase such as this:


    The pharse example is based on three-finger picking, but the Galax lick itself can also be played two-fingered (pipp) or frailed (iipp - all downstrokes).
